About Clanwilliam

Clanwilliam:

Known for the variety it offers tourists, Clanwilliam is one of the oldest towns in South Africa. In 1732, Voortrekkers settled along the Olifants River and in 1820, the English administration of the Cape established a Magistrate's Court here.

Wild Flowers and Cape Fynbos:

August and September each year depending on the winter's rainfall, the area is transformed into a spectacular floral showcase. The big annual Wildflower Show takes place in the NG Kerk in Main Street.

Clanwilliam Dam:

Clanwilliam Dam is a spectacular body of water which is popular for recreational purposes of all kinds and is know as the most popular dam in the western cape for water-skiing, and for the annual Bass classic angling competition held in October.

Cedarberg Wilderness:

Cedarberg Wilderness is a remote and pristine area with its breathtaking natural beauty, including a variety of fynbos and dramatic rock formations which offers visitors a unique wilderness experience. Only walking and hiking are permitted in this area.

Rock Art:

Cedarberg is one of the best areas for ancient San (Bushman) rock paintings in the world.

Ramskop Nature Reserve:

The town maintains a little Nature Reserve above the Dam Resort, where you can enjoy the flora of the Cedarberg region on a relaxing walk.

Clanwilliam Museum:

In the "Ou Tronk", the old prison at the end of the Main Road, is a fascinating Museum with old Voortrekker wagons and many other artefacts from the time of the pioneers. The history of Clanwilliam and of the Rooibos Tea production is also documented here.

Rooibos Tea Company:

Rooibos Tea Company is open for visitors to sample of their tea. To see a teaproducing farm visit Elandsberg Farm on Lamberts Bay road near Graafwater. South Africa is the only producer of rooibos tea in the world.

Old Rhenish Mission Wuppertal:

Visit the Mission which dates back to 1834. Situated in the very heart of the rugged wilderness of the Cedarberg and the Tatra Mountains. The village is famous for the Strassbergers little shoe factory, with its well-known and hand-made "Veld Skoene". Access from Clanwilliam via the Pakhuis Pass. The road is quite rough but if you drive slowly you can make it in a normal car.
